If you’re craving the supremely Spanish dish callos a la madrileña-a stew featuring garbanzos and tripe, head to J & R (NY) Supermarket at 1406 Avenue U in Sheepshead Bay for all your animal body part needs.  In this nation of animal body part phobias, J & R offers all those organs and appendages you can’t find anywhere else-and at bargain prices.

Though traditional callos recipes vary depending on who’s grandmother you ask, many depend on tripe, cow’s feet, cow’s snouts and ham bones for that oh-so-animalicious flavor that leaves you wanting more. At J & R you’ll have your pick of animals.  Many organs come in three sizes: pig, chicken and cow.  And there’s a fantastic produce selection to boot. The biggest challenge may be identifying what you buy. Handmade price tags mark each item, but product names are noticeably missing. Friendly staff identify what they can, but occasionally the items just don’t translate. For the adventurous foodie, pointing to the mushroom thing with a really long stem or the melon looking item that is fuzzy and shaped like a cucumber may be the solution. Also, check out the fish-it’s delivered four times a week.

Looking for a tasty callos recipe?  Try this one. For best results, make your callos a day before you serve them.

  1. mmm, snout. Great post! I’m excited to check this place out. The greens look yummy too. My favorite place to stare at meat is Bayard Meat Market in Manhattan’s Chinatown. I also find the meat counter at Pacific Supermarket in Jackson Heights strangely calming.

  2. Now, this certainly is a rarity in the US!
How long it took us to find a (”real”) loaf of bread in Winston-Salem nearly caused me a shock :P (Of course, New York is more of a cosmopolitan city, so I understand things are different there).
After flipping its virtual pages, I can say that this is one amazing blog :) Keek the hard work up, and remember to eat properly!
Speaking of which, let me drop you a (not really funny, British) joke:
It’s about this man who goes to the doctor and shows up with a carrot coming out his left ear, a (peeled) banana in his right ear, tomato sauce all over his face and chips inside both his nosetrils.
    -What’s wrong with me?-he asks.
-I would say-the doctor answers-you, sir, are not eating properly.
    (Now you laugh).

Great idea but a lot of work for you! The pics were great. Nothing like that here in Sarasota altho we recently had two Thai restaurants open on Main St!

    Good luck! Nana
